Obtaining

Clay generates under the ground in areas with a Rainfall value of at least 500. Breaking clay blocks with a shovel yields one to three clay items.

Clay is relatively common, but can be covered in grass, making it difficult to spot. Clay deposits can be located by the existence of Golden Rod flowers on the surface Grid Golden Rod.png. Even if the Rainfall value in an area is too low for clay, riverbeds can generate clay.

There is also a small chance of one clay ball dropping when a dirt block is broken.

Usage

Clay is primarily used in the creation of Pottery. Most clay items need to be fired in a Pit Kiln or Kiln. Clay objects are created using an interface similar to knapping. To open this interface, right-click with a stack of 5 or more clay.

Tool & Weapon Molds

Note: Some of these molds may have slightly different patterns; moving the entire pattern 1 block left, right, up , or down. However it is important to keep the outer border intact whenever possible.

Clay Tiles

Clay Tiles can be used to craft the Ceramic Tile Roof. They are made by crafting a log and two pieces of clay together.

Clay Bricks

Clay Bricks can be fired and then used to craft Clay Brick Blocks. They cannot be crafted into chimneys or walls, like Stone Bricks can.

History

Beta
v1Added clay pits.
v2 Build 47Clay pit depth increased from 1 to 2.
Max height of Clay spawning reduced from 150 to 147. They may be harder to spot now, but they are still there, just beneath the grass.
v2 Build 49iClay no longer generates in areas of dry grass.
Build 76Added Golden Rod flowers which only grow on clay.
77.0Added Pottery.
Added Fire Clay.
79.0Clay grass spreads onto other soil blocks.
Clay drops at least 1 clay item when broken.
80.12Clay can now generate on riverbeds, regardless of Rainfall.
80.13Fixed clay blowpipes being unable to be placed on the ground.
81.1Added the Ceramic Tile Roof, made from Clay Tiles
81.3Added the Large Kiln for firing many clay items at once
81.6Clay Tiles are now crafted with a log instead of knapped
81.7Removed Clay Tile knapping recipe.

Trivia

  • Both clay and clay grass blocks are not affected by gravity, meaning that it is possible to dig into the side of a clay deposit to make a small starting shelter.
