Shellfish are a type of item that spawns in shore biomes on top of sand. They can be used as food and to obtain seashells.
Obtaining
Scallop
Scallops spawn in the shallows of Shore biomes.
They can be collected or placed in Salt Water with Right Click. They are alive when collected, and if taken out of the water, they will start to loose durability over time. When their durability reaches zero (this takes several in-game hours) the scallop turns into a Dead Scallop. Dead Scallops cannot be placed back in the Water and will immediately begin to Decay. If the live Scallop is put back into Salt Water before it dies, it will instantly regain full durability. It can will also survive if placed in a Barrel or Large Ceramic Vessel full of Salt Water.
Note: Due to a bug, the Barrel method of keeping the Scallop alive only works if the Scallop is placed into the barrel while the player is standing in salt water.
A high Scallop population will increase the spawning of Seastars, which eat the Scallops and reduce their numbers.
Seastar
Seastars spawn in the shallows of of Shore biomes. Their behavior is nearly identical to the Scallop. They can be collected and placed with Right Click. And have the same durabilty and death mechanics as Scallops.
An increase in the population of Seastars will reduce the number of Scallops nearby as Seastars eat Scallops.
Usage
Scallops
Scallops can be crafted with a Knife to get 1 oz. of Scallop meat and 2 Seashells. Since Scallops are farmable, this means Seashells are a renewable source of Lime in areas without Fluxstone.
