Overview

The Blast Furnace is used to smelt Iron Ore into liquid Pig Iron. Pig Iron ingots can be worked into Steel.

Obtaining

The Blast Furnace is made from eight Wrought Iron Double Sheets and a Crucible.

Construction

The height of the Blast Furnace determines how much ore, flux and charcoal it can hold, and thus the maximum amount of ore which can be smelted at one time. The smallest Blast Furnace possible has a 1 block high chimney and requires a minimum of 4 fire brick blocks and 12 wrought iron metal sheets to build. The largest Blast Furnace possible has a 5 block high chimney, and requires a minimum of 20 fire brick blocks and 60 wrought iron metal sheets to build. This totals to 25 fire brick items, which is equivalent to 50 fire clay balls or 50 graphite ore and 50 kaolinite ore. However, due to the 2 crucibles involved (one underneath and one in the blast furnace crafting recipe), the absolute total is 60 fire clay and as such an equal amount of graphite and kaolinite.

A minimal size Blast Furnace is constructed as follows:

  • The Fire Bricks: Two blocks above the ground, construct a "tube" by surrounding the center air block on all four sides.
  • The Metal Sheets: Place wrought iron or higher tier tool-metal metal sheets around the sides of the chimney. Note: Sheets do not need to be placed on the top or bottom.
  • The Crucible: Place the crucible on the ground below the center air block.
  • The Blast Furnace Block: Place the Blast Furnace Block between the chimney and the crucible underneath the center air block.
  • The Bellows: Place the Bellows on the side of the Blast Furnace Block, making sure the side with the hole is facing the Blast Furnace. These bellows must be mechanized
  • Finalization:: Place a Tuyere inside the Blast Furnace.
  • Expansion: Blast Furnaces may expand their total storage capacity by adding up to four additional layers to the existing construction. To expand a Blast Furnace, simply add an additional layer to the chimney.

Making the Tuyere

Tuyeres can only be made from tool metals, by working a Metal Double Sheet on an anvil after selecting the Tuyere on the plan selection button.

Usage

The finalized Blast Furnace fills when charcoal, flux and ore is dropped into the chimney. Right click the blast furnace block with a Firestarter or a Flint & Steel to activate it. The front of the blast furnace block and the top of the chimney should both start to glow.

GUI

The Blast Furnace GUI can be opened by right clicking the Blast Furnace block.

Blast Furnace GUI.png

  • Temperature Gauge: This shows the current temperature of the Blast Furnace. The temperature can be raised by adding more coal or by attaching a bellows to either side of the Blast Furnace and pumping it.
  • Ore: How much unmelted ore is present in the Blast Furnace.
  • Charcoal: How much charcoal is present in the Blast Furnace. Regular coal cannot be used in the Blast Furnace, only charcoal.
    • Note: You want to make sure this bar is always equal to or fuller than the ore bar!
  • Output: How much liquid metal is ready to be removed from the Blast Furnace.

In addition, there is also a slot in the top right corner that will hold a Tuyere. A Tuyere must be used in order for a Bellows to work properly with the Blast Furnace. Note: If there is no tuyere in the blast furnace, the bellows will not be able to make the blast furnace hot enough to smelt the ore. The tuyere is REQUIRED in order to actually get anything out of the blast furnace. Without a tuyere, the blast furnace will never reach completion.

A tuyere, also can be spelled as tuyère, is a tube, nozzle or pipe through which air is blown into a furnace or hearth.

Smelting Ores

Note: The Blast Furnace can only be used to smelt Iron Ores. If you wish to smelt large quantities of other ores, you will need to use a Crucible.

To smelt iron ore in a Blast Furnace, throw iron ore into the top of the Blast Furnace, along with an equal amount of Flux and an equal or greater amount of Charcoal all at the same time. Each layer of the blast furnace can process up to four pieces of ore. Right click the Blast Furnace Block with a Firestarter or Flint & Steel to light it. To keep the temperature high after throwing in the initial lighting piece of charcoal, it is recommended to keep a 1:1 ratio of charcoal to ore, or higher. If there is more ore than charcoal, the temperature will begin to drop.

With a tuyere in the top-right slot of the Blast Furnace's GUI, work a bellows placed adjacent-to and facing the Blast Furnace to reach a sufficient temperature to smelt the ore.

If the ratio of charcoal to ore is at least 1:1 and the temperature is kept high enough with the use of a bellows, the ore will begin to melt. The ore counter will eventually deplete, filling the output counter with the resulting metal.

Once the ore is smelted, the tuyere will take damage, and you will need to place a Crucible beneath the Blast Furnace block to catch the liquid pig iron.

78.0Blast Furnace requires Fire Brick Blocks as its chimney as well as for the outer sides to have wrought iron or better metal sheets on them.
Blast Furnace needs to be lit with a fire starter or flint & steel instead of working automatically.

Trivia

  • A minimum size blast furnace requires 20 Clay, 20 Kaolinite, 20 Graphite, and 5,600 units of wrought iron (224 regular iron-bearing ore) to create, including the crucible used in the crafting recipe as well as the one placed under the working blast furnace.
  • Each additional layer of the blast furnace requires 10 Clay, 10 Kaolinite, 10 Graphite, and 2,400 units of wrought iron (96 regular iron-bearing ore) to create.
