The lure of the fishing rod can be sent out by {{key|RMB}}ing. The lure can be sent further by holding {{key|RMB}}. Holding {{key|RMB}} while the line is still cast will draw it in. If the line does not touch water or a block by the time all the line has been cast, the line and the hook will be lost and the fishing rod will be unusable until the player repairs it. Switching to a different item in the player's hotbar while the fishing rod is cast will break the line, causing the hook and the amount of line that was cast to be lost. To repair a broken fishing rod, the player has to craft it with a bone needle and at least one string.

Usage

Fishing rods can be used to catch Fish. The first step to catch a fish is to locate the fish that you want to catch. Fishes spawn in oceans, lakes and rivers, and are actual entities that can be seen. The existence of visible fish means that fish can be caught in that area. Fish spawn regularly around Coral Reefs.

A thusly crafted fishing rod will not have a full durability bar, because the durability bar of a fishing rod represents the amount of line that is left. More line can be added by crafting the fishing rod with string. The lure of the fishing rod can be sent out by Rmb.png Right Clicking. The lure can be sent further by holding Rmb.png Right Click. Holding Rmb.png Right Click while the line is still cast will draw it in.

Fish will swim towards the bobber by themselves as long as they are within a short distance from it. The player will know if a fish has bitten the hook by paying attention to the bobber, which will go underwater, and because the game helpfully notifies the player with a message saying "Oh! A bite!". Once the fish has bitten the hook, the player has to pull it on land while avoiding to snap the line. In this phase, the player's xp bar represents the tension in the line which raises when the player reels in the fish and lowers when the player lets go. If the bar fills completely, the line snaps and both it and the hook are lost. The goal is to keep enough tension on the line without letting the tension go too high until the fish exhausts itself. If the player manages to pull the fish on land, it dies and drop a quantity of fish proportionate to its size. Smaller fish cannot resist the tension completely, and will be reeled in despite trying to escape, while larger fish must be exhausted before they can be reeled in.
