Axe Uses

File:Axes.gif

Axes are used to chop down trees, and acquire fruit tree saplings. Stone axes are much weaker then metal axes, which are much more useful as the time it takes to cut down a tree is greatly reduced. When cutting a tree with an axe that does not have the required durability, only part of the tree is cut down (top of tree is broken first). Also, when using a stone axe to cut trees you might get fewer logs than if you used a metal axe. Stone axes only have a 90% chance of yielding a log from a tree block.

As of Build 77, axes are no longer used to craft logs into planks. Instead, metal saws must be used.

Metal Axe

Metal axes can only be made from tool metals. They can be cast in ceramic molds, or worked on a metal anvil.

Casting

Main article: Casting

As of Build 77, Bismuth Bronze, Black Bronze, Bronze, and Copper Axes can be cast using a Vessel and a Ceramic Mold instead of working on an anvil.

Once you have your Unshaped Copper (or a bronze) you need to make a Ceramic Axe Mold:

Fire the clay mold in a Pit Kiln to get:

To pour your mold, right click your liquid unshaped ingot to open the casting interface:

Put the ceramic axe mold in the second input slot and wait for the filled mold to finished.

Smithing

Main article: Working

Axe heads can also be crafted by using ingots on an anvil with a hammer. This is the only option for higher tier metals that cannot be cast. The durability depends both on the metal used and the skill of the smith forging the tool.
